In a recent interview, Mariah Carey opened up about her secret history with bipolar disorder. The pop legend revealed in an intimate conversation that although she was diagnosed back in 2001, Carey “didn’t want to believe” it was true. It took her years of self-reflection before she came to terms with her mental health issues. Thankfully, after some time, Carey has sought treatment and is in a better place than before. Here’s how Mariah explained it.
Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me. It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music.
As she explained to People, Mariah Carey was first diagnosed after a mental and physical breakdown in 2001. But it wasn’t until she experienced the “hardest couple of years I’ve been through,” which included romantic woes and professional troubles, that the singer-songwriter finally decided to seek treatment. Even though she is easily among the most celebrated and successful singers of her time, Mariah Carey found herself struggling in silence during this time. Mariah is now in treatment and she is taking medication for Bipolar II disorder. It involves periods of depression as well as hypomania.
I’m actually taking medication that seems to be pretty good. It’s not making me feel too tired or sluggish or anything like that. Finding the proper balance is what is most important… For a long time I thought I had a severe sleep disorder. But it wasn’t normal insomnia and I wasn’t lying awake counting sheep. I was working and working and working … I was irritable and in constant fear of letting people down. It turns out that I was experiencing a form of mania. Eventually I would just hit a wall. I guess my depressive episodes were characterized by having very low energy. I would feel so lonely and sad — even guilty that I wasn’t doing what I needed to be doing for my career.”
Thankfully, things are taking a turn for the better for Mariah Carey. She is currently in the studio working on her latest album, which is expected to arrive later this year. Carey also admits she is in “a really good place right now,” one where she is comfortable revealing her struggles. Mariah hopes her story serves as a good example for her multitudes of fans, and she hopes shining a light on her struggles with bipolar disorder can become inspirational.
I’m hopeful we can get to a place where the stigma is lifted from people going through anything alone. It can be incredibly isolating. It does not have to define you and I refuse to allow it to define me or control me.
We’re glad to see Mariah Carey is in a better place, and opening up about her mental health struggles. With so much negative stigma around mental health, perhaps Carey can use her platform to inform her audience and the general public.
